Premier League: Way clear for Tottenham as Villa pull out of Bentley race

Aston Villa have dropped out of the race for David Bentley, leaving the way clear for Tottenham - if they can persuade Blackburn to sell.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill says he is no longer pursuing the winger after having a bid rejected.

Villa and Tottenham have been in battle for the 23-year-old England player, with Blackburn boss Paul Ince saying he wanted to keep the Bentley at Ewood Park.

O'Neill said: "I wouldn't normally respond to individual links but, as Paul Ince rightly said, we did make a bid for David Bentley.

"That was some time ago and Blackburn rejected the bid - as is their prerogative. We do not intend revisiting that and we have switched out attentions to other transfer targets."

Bentley is keen on a move to Tottenham, who should have plenty of cash to spend if strikers Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov move to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.
