Junior Rugby: Martin's on target to inspire ONs to victory
Ruthless Old Northamptonians shrugged off a spirited challenge from town rivals Boys Brigade Old Boys before storming to an impressive victory at Billing Road.
The ONs started strongly, and were soon 12-0 to the good thanks to tries from skipper Richard Blank and Alex Rose, with Will Martin adding the conversion for the first.
Martin missed his second attempt, but that was to be the only black mark against him as he landed eight out of eight in the rest of the match.
BB hit back strongly and threatened the ONs line for a 15-minute spell, with the home side looking understandably rusty after five weeks without a game.
But ONs held firm and Martin potted over a penalty to make it 15-0.
Sam Street scored a try following a break from Adam Civil, with Martin converting to make the score 22-0 at half-time.
A much-improved second-half performance was required from the ONs and it duly came as they reduced the errors and began to play with something approaching their pre-Christmas form, and that proved to be bad news for BB.
Street got the tries rolling in the second half following a cross-field kick from Rose, who then dotted down himself.
Martin took a break from kicking points to score a try of his own before Civil, with an outrageous dummy, finished off the best move of the match as the ONs attacked down the left before rapidly transferring the ball along the backs to score in the right corner.
Martin got a second before Ian Rogers completed the scoring late on.
Martin converted all of the second-half tries to rack up a personal tally of 29 points.
BB battled throughout but were simply outclassed. They will be hoping for better luck next weekend when they take on Leicester Forest.
n THE ONs IIs were on the wrong end of a beating against Peterborough IIs, goin down 39-5. Dan Napier scored their consolation try.
n SAM POUNDS scored a try for ONs IIIs which was converted by Steve Gillespie, but they were beaten 43-7 by Dunstablians IIIs.
n Simon Baghomian led the way with a hat-trick of tries as the ONs IVs beat BBOB IIIs 52-0. Also dotting down were Stuart Buglass (2), Dave Taylor, Gareth Chapman and Grant Kearns.
Steve Evans kicked five conversions and John Deeks one.
