Increase in number of people on care register

The number of vulnerable people on Anglian Water's water care register has increased by almost 2,000 since customers in Northampton and Daventry were last week told to boil tap water.

The company said it was making good progress cleaning and flushing the 1,000 miles of pipework necessary to lift the boil notice and was continuing to deliver bottled water around the county.

Oliver Adams bakery has fitted water filters to ensure the water it uses is free from cryptosporidium.

An Anglian Water spokesman said: "Our water care register is now at 2,260 people and it started at 300. What has happened has helped us get to all those vulnerable customers.

"We're delivering to 151 schools, 113 care homes, 61 nurseries and six hospitals.

"We're making good progress and there's been evidence of sterling work from all quarters; staff, contractors and members of the public."

The spokesman said ultraviolet treatment had been carried out on all water leaving Pitsford.

He said: "People must still boil water until they get the green all-clear card but we hope on Friday 60 per cent of homes will have the boil notice lifted.

"People will find out by the delivering of a green all-clear card, which will happen overnight on Friday.

"Anyone who is unsure should check on the internet, where they will be able to put in their postcode and find out."

The remainder of affected households will have their boil notices lifted in phases over the next two weeks.

The spokesman said: "We believe we have found the cause and it is now being investigated by the Drinking Water Inspectorate. We're complying with the investigation and they will release their findings in due course.

"We noticed that we have got fewer calls coming into our customer service centre and fewer visitors to the contact point in Market Square, which suggests people are getting the message.

"Thanks to those who reacted to our request not to water their gardens overnight, the supply is back to normal now."

The spokesman reminded people that not all filters would work to eradicate cryptosporidium and reiterated Anglian Water advice for all tap water to be boiled.
