THE TIMES

Tottenham Hotspur were last night on the verge of agreeing a 6.8 million fee to sign Vedran Corluka, which would take their spending on players this summer to more than 50 million. Also: Everton have denied that the club are for sale but Bill Kenwright is prepared to vacate Goodison Park if he can find wealthy investors who can turn the team into title contenders.

Manchester United will try and convince Cristiano Ronaldo to stay one more season - by promising to then let him go for 65 million. Also: Tottenham are ready to smash the British transfer record with a sensational 32 million swoop for Valencia star David Villa.

Cristiano Ronaldo has refused to come back and face Sir Alex Ferguson - in a last desperate bid to force Manchester United to sell him to Real Madrid. Also: Kevin Pietersen stepped into the breach as England's new captain yesterday, but only after laying down the law to coach Peter Moores.

English cricket entered a new era on Monday as Kevin Pietersen, the adopted South African who has become the leading light of the team, was formally confirmed as England's new Test and one-day captain. Also: The Football Association are on a collision course with the Premier League over the elite clubs' plan to hold mid-season tournaments around the world from January 2011.

Kevin Pietersen last night conceded that his first job as the new England captain will be to build bridges with coach Peter Moores. Also: Deco last night insisted that he is ready to take on the responsibility of being Chelsea's playmaker general - and set the Premier League on fire with some Portuguese flair.

Gareth Barry appeared to be no closer to joining Liverpool last night, with the club still waiting for the green light on extra financial support needed from owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to conclude the deal. Also: Tottenham Hotspur were given reason to hope last night that some resolution could be reached in their stand-off with Zenit St Petersburg over the fee for Andrei Arshavin with the Russian club's president Alexander Dyukov due to meet with the player's agent.
