Homeowners told not to water garden

Gardeners in Northampton and Daventry are being asked by Anglian Water to suspend watering their plants to speed along the tap water crisis.

Staff at the water company worked all weekend to treat water at Pitsford Reservoir and now starting to flush it through the pipes.

But a spokeswoman said it would make the process faster if people would hold off from using hose pipes, despite their parched gardens caused by the recent warm spell.

Sara Rowland said: "We would appreciate it if people would hold off from using hose pipes and sprinklers, bearing in mind there is rain forecast this week.

"It is one of those areas which customers can do their bit to make this process go a little bit faster."

A sprinkler uses the same amount of water in an hour that a family of four uses in a day.

And using it or a hosepipe continuously reduces the amount of water in the system for flushing the distribution pipes.

Meanwhile, the water company said the boil notice across Northamptonshire and Daventry was still "very much in place".
