End in sight to water crisis
The notice to boil tap water which has affected 250,000 people could be lifted for three-quarters of Anglian Water's customers on Friday.
The water company said it believes 75 per cent of customers in the Northampton area will have the boil notices lifted, an increase on this week's earlier estimate of 60 per cent of people.
Anglian Water's chief operating officer, Peter Simpson, said: "We are pleased with the progress that has been made in recent days and I would like to thank all of our customers for their patience, support and understanding.
"Our aim is to return water supplies to their usual high standards as quickly as possible and we will continue to work around the clock until we achieve this."
Anglian Water said its good progress was due to the success of its work at Pitsford water treatment works and the flushing of water mains.
Flushing work in Daventry is also ahead of schedule and the estimated time for removing the boil notice there has been reduced by a week, until Friday, July 11.
Anglian Water said it intended to provide more bottled water to vulnerable customers as restrictions are lifted in Northampton.
The water company reiterated its message that customers must continue to boil their water until it issues confirmation they no longer need to do so. Customers will receive a green "all clear" card, which shows a green tick over a tap. In Daventry, people may experience reduced water pressure and air bubbles in their water – which give a milky appearance, which is harmless – over the next few days as Anglian Water's flushing programme intensifies.
