Distraction burglary advice following water problems

Police are warning residents in Northampton, Daventry and the west of the county to make sure they don't become the victim of a distraction burglary due to the current water contamination crisis.

Anglian Water will have more staff than usual out and about providing water but people should make sure they still check for identification to make sure they are a genuine caller, said Northamptonshire Police.

This is their guidance:

- If you are not sure, don't open the door.

- Don't be tricked. Only open the door if you know the caller or are expecting a visitor.

- If callers claim to be from Anglian Water ask to see their identification.

- People are advised to check with Anglian Water on 08457 145 145 that it is a genuine caller before answering the door.

- Anglian Water officials delivering water to residents do not need to access your home.

If you have any concerns about callers at your front door, do not open the door and call police immediately.
