COBBLERS: Joe's triple target

Joe Benjamin has set himself a trio of targets after finally breaking into the Cobblers first team.

The 19-year-old has been on the fringes of the senior side, and a regular at youth and reserve-team level, for the past two years.

Benjamin had been limited to just five appearances as a subtitute prior to his full debut on Saturday, which came after a spell on loan at Eastbourne that saw the forward earn some rave reviews.

It was a move away that the player feels has done him the world of good, and he is now looking to tick three boxes in the Northampton senior side.

"I've got pace and strength and hopefully I can use that to help the team," he said. "My aims are to get on the scoresheet, set a few goals up, and keep my place in the team.

"All the best to the players who are out injured at the moment but if I can take my chance to stay in the team then that's what I'm looking to do.

"I'd love to make a name for myself at this football club over the next month.

"We've got some good players out injured at the moment but I'm confident we can get some results over Christmas.

"There have been times in the past when I've been frustrated, but I know the manager will put me in when he feels I'm ready and this is my chance now to have a go."

Benjamin didn't score at Eastbourne, but feels the quality of the team there has helped him regain his self belief.

"It's not too different to league two football to be honest," said Benjamin. "It was a really good spell for me because Eastbourne are a good team and they helped me get my confidence back. The quality of players obviously isn't as good as in the league, but I enjoyed my time there."
