CAN Northampton
When a child knows their mother or father has a drug or alcohol problem, play can be the last thing on their mind.
Yet, the Play Days scheme run by the drugs, alcohol and homeless charity CAN aims to bring these children together to enjoy fun activities.
The events also involve the parents themselves, enabling them to enjoy spending time with their youngsters.
Service director Terry Bogg said: "The results are amazing.
We take them on family outings. In the summer we did some family picnics for people who had never been on picnics in their life.
"We have done about seven or eight days this year.
We get whole families together and sometimes get grandparents about.
It is about relationships and family units."
Reliant on donations and fund-raising, CAN has applied for 1,000 to keep this therapeutic play resource going.
Mr Bogg said: "We have donations and that is how we keep going.
This would mean we could roll the programme out for another year.
Each play day costs 500."
CAN is an independent agency, first established in 1972, which provides drug, alcohol and homelessness services throughout Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire.
The group employs more than 100 staff and about 17 volunteers.
