Those people who think pensioners are not interested in learning about computers could not be more wrong, according to Northampton Age Concern's Active Aging manager Sue Watts.

The charity, which works to support older people in all areas of life, has applied to Make A Wish for 2,000 to buy a set of four laptops to boost computer education facilities.

Currently, the organisation runs basic Information Technology courses, but would like to extend these into the community.

The charity currently runs 12-week Get Set Go courses within the community and self help groups. The idea is to offer taster sessions in different subjects at venues such as community centres.

Mrs Watts said learning about computers was an important tool for older people.

She said: "A lot of older people don't live near their families and this can be a way of keeping in touch; they might want to use email to keep in contact.

"It can also be a lifeline for people who can't go out, to do internet shopping.

"It is a fallacy to say that older people don't want to know.

They do want to know about computers."
