A switch in time clears way for Vikings
VENTURA VIKINGS started April where they left off last month with a win against one of their rivals at the bottom end of Rushden and District League’s Division One.
The impressive 4-1 victory stretches their unbeaten run to three games with seven points taken.
However they had to do things the hard way. After missing a host of first-half chances Vikings found themselves a goal down at the break as Paul Randall put Kettering Town Social in front.
Vikings reshuffled their side for the second half and drew level with an excellent strike into the top corner through the outstanding Mark Panter.
Paul Chisholm then added a brace before Jase Farmer scored the fourth to wrap the game up.
The Division One
championship looks all but settled and likely to be heading back into the hands of current holders Valleybrook United after their 5-0 away demolition of nearest challengers Irthlingborough Cons Club.
Sol Benjamin shone with four of the visitors’ goals and Mark Njotsa added to the score.
Irchester Sports seem to have found their form as they won their mid-table battle away to Mercenaries who led 2-0 at half-time with goals from Ian Symington and Nathan Jones.
The visitors hit back with a brace each for Darren Halfyard – including one from the penalty spot – and Paul Rice to complete the comeback.
Rushden Lancaster Saints managed a comfortable 4-1 home success over Odyssey – claiming their first win for four weeks.
The winning strikes came from Dino Disalvo, Phil Nicholls, Steven Ainge and Kris Hall while Rob Foster grabbed the visitors’ reply.
Vic Millers struggled to stamp any kind of supremecy on their game with bottom club Gleneagles, although they were ahead at the break through an own-goal.
The visitors made life even more difficult for Millers in the second half and were unlucky when they conceded a penalty which James Daldy converted.
However Gleneagles scored a deserved late goal through Adrian Whitaker to make the last five minutes very uncomfortable for the home side.
o Division Two leaders Saxon Taverners recorded a vital 2-1 away win over Higham Town.
The scores were locked at
1-1 with five minutes to play as Stewart Richards and Matt Clifford had already scored for their respective clubs. Then Joe Judge grabbed a late winner for the visitors.
Woolies Old Boys kept up the pressure on Saxon with a comfortable 5-0 win away to Kettering Highfield – stretching their unbeaten run to seven games.
Craig Tindle’s double was supported by Steve Panner, Jimmy Simpson and Gary Massey.
Third-placed Wollaston Patriots also hit five at home to Reality Sports. On target for the hosts were Lee Warman (2), Charlie Pipe and a penalty each for Terry Murdin and Craig Harrower while James Brown replied.
Woolcomber had a deserved 2-0 home success as they dominated their game against Sargents with Graham Steward and Simon Fox scoring in each half.
o The race for the Division Three title is hotting up with Earls Barton grabbing a vital 2-1 win at Colworth to move into second place.
Wayne Dickens was on target for the home side in their last game of the season. But his strike was unable to prevent defeat as Alex Parrish’s effort and an own-goal won the points.
Tollbar Rangers’ recent form has been far from convincing and they could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Tudors.
Matthew Woods hit a brace for the home side but he was matched by the efforts of Jamie Horsman for the
visitors.
Saxon Taverners Reserves are fast becoming the draw specialists in this section as they secured their third successive stalemate at home to Railway.
Impressive youngster James Wager was once again on target with a double – backed up by an Adam Gaggini strike. But Railway hit back through John Bowden’s brace and Simon Anderson.
The other game saw a much-needed victory for Isham Lilacs as they saw off the challenge of bottom club Irthlingborough Cons Club Reserves.
Brothers Jamie and Richard Hornbuckle were on target for the visitors. However they were outgunned by Stephen Wooldridge (2), Oliver Frankling, Clint Hale and Jimmy Marks.
o Only one game was played in Division Four as Kettering Town Social Reserves travelled to Irchester Romans who are looking to gain that elusive runners-up spot.
And Romans did themselves no harm with a 2-0 victory thanks to two exceedingly good goals from Adam Kipling.
