Fall in car crime is good for everyone
Theft of cars or from them has halved in Northamptonshire over the last four years.
That is indeed good news for it’s a crime which causes a lot of inconvenience to owners and an added burden for the police who have more serious offences to solve.
The drop is probably due to improvements by manufacturers to make cars more difficult to steal and greater vigilance by drivers.
I don’t know whether I have been unlucky or not, but I’ve been a victim three times, all the vehicles being taken from outside my house.
The first time, the car was recovered months later and on the day I received a cheque from the insurers.
It was found at Redditch, in Worcestershire, where it had been dumped on the day it was taken.
The second time , the thief had torched it near some lock-ups a few hundred yards from where I lived.
What infuriated me more than anything else was the insinuation by the insurance company that I had done it.
The third time I had to go to Milton Keynes to retrieve my replacement car, but it was worthwhile for whoever took it had left some interesting tools on the back seat.
Of course, it is not only the car owner who suffers from these thefts. The driving community as a whole has to dig deeper in its pocket as insurers beef up premiums to cover their losses.
Heads they win, tails you lose.
One crime that is increasing nationwide is robbery at knifepoint.
It is a cowardly offence and my hope is that one day, such a criminal picks on an expert in unarmed combat who proceeds to give him the hiding of his life.
I wonder if he will dare to complain to the police.
NO wonder foreigners believe the UK is a milch cow.
Last week it was revealed that more than £2 billion a year was being handed out in benefits to newcomers who include thousands of illegal immigrants.
How many hospitals or schools and the staff to run them could be provided with that kind of money?
Officials are now probing how much of that was obtained by fraud.
If the investigations results in that enormous cost being reduced, some of the money saved should be spent on building new prisons to house those found guilty and who, after serving their sentences, should be sent back to their own country.
WE certainly need more prison space for those who seem to delight in cocking a snoop at authority.
Apparently in one year alone 21,000 of all offenders who received a caution were at it again with a month.
A spell behind bars might teach them the error of their ways and give the public a break from their activities.
BOYS and girls come out to play, the sun is shining, etc. Not any more it seems.
A survey has established that only one youngster in five goes into the street every day and a third of them have never climbed a tree or made a den.
Whether it is due to parental anxiety or children preferring to watch TV or playing computer games, they are certainly missing a lot of fun enjoyed by precious generations and which went towards character building.
