Motorists are being warned about con artists who flag down cars and tell drivers they have run out of petrol before giving them fake gold in return for cash.
Police have issued a warning about the scam following reports across the county, including in Rothersthorpe Road, Kislingbury, and High Street, Weedon, as well as Kettering Road, in Islip, London Road, Braunston, and the A14 at in Welford.
Police say the gangs will flag down cars and tell motorists they have run out of fuel but have no money. They will then offer to exchange gold jewellery for cash.
The buyer will later discover that the jewellery they have purchased is fake. Police are unsure whether it is one group or several groups operating the scam.
A police spokesman said: “We are unsure whether this is one group or several groups operating this scam.
“We would urge motorists who find themselves approached to refuse any offers of jewellery, to take in as much information about the offenders as possible and to contact us on 101.”
