Northampton MP Brian Binley launches scathing attack on Government saying chancellor ‘must stop tilting at windmills’

OUTSPOKEN Conservative MP Brian Binley has again voiced strong criticism of the Government, this time expressing his dismay at the cost of “green energy” policies.

The Tory MP for Northampton South accused Chancellor George Osborne of “losing the toolbox” for economic growth at the start of the month and described Prime Minister David Cameron and his government last week as a “shady, back-street second-hand car dealership”.

Mr Binley has now openly criticised the Government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and has accused the Chancellor of “tilting at windmills”.

Writing on his online blog yesterday, Mr Binley said the Government needed to stop pandering to Liberal Democrats and “eco-warriors”.

Mr Binley stated: “Our gas and electricity prices are soaring so that the Government can meet its pledges to cut carbon emissions. Surely no-one needs reminding that we’re in a recession?

“Our priority should be to get the economy back on track, not pander to Liberal Democrats by building wind farms which don’t even work.

“The money we’re throwing at climate change zealots could be put to far better use elsewhere.

“Businesses are finding themselves crippled by carbon taxes. It may be fashionable at the moment to be an eco-warrior, but the reality is that it’s actively harming our chances of struggling out of the financial mire. There is a real danger that the ‘green’ lobby is keeping Britain in the ‘red’.”

Mr Binley highlighted a paper from the Department for Energy and Climate Change which showed that in 2011 electricity prices were 15 per cent higher than they would have been without the green policies in place and gas prices were seven per cent higher.

He said: “The Chancellor needs to stop tilting at windmills: the economy is not growing and our treasured triple-A rating is in danger of downgrade.

“The cuts and austerity drive may have had some success in keeping the markets on side, but it will all be for naught unless we can get the economy moving as well. The Government’s priorities must be pro-business and helping repressed consumers”.

Clever Dick..You may be correct..the rules have changed...the Govt cannot just call an election when it wants any more. However, if there was a vote of no confidence, there would be calls for Cameron to ask the queen to dissolve Parlt. Somehow I think BB perfers sniping from the sidelines rather than going over the top.

Point of order mojo. Loss of a vote of confidence does not automatically trigger a General Election. The monarch has the prerogative to ask someone else from the existing parliament to try and form a government - particularly if there has been an election recently.

Binley should table a vote of no confidence in the government and if successful it will lead to a general election it's called democracy.

Perhaps BB can only live for today and not prepare for the future which is why he thinks like this. Maybe he should hang his jacket up and retire and let a younger more energetic conservative take his place. Let's face it, has he done anything for Northampton South recently?

Go Brian, give it to them straight. Total sense because the way we're going unemployment will grow as will the welfare bill, the cost of living will increase. There will be more pressure on those of us left who are still able to pay taxes. Something has got to give. All this for schemes which at best are unproven!

I agree with Brian that current green policies are a waste of time and money, and that the Government need to prioritise by focusing on the current recession in helping ordinary people to simply survive. There are much better and effective ways to provide green energy than windfarms, and one of them is through converting waste into energy instead of dumping it in landfills to poison the air we breathe. As wonderful as being an 'eco-warrior' is, it appears to demand a sacrifice of common sense in it's blind panic to save the world. Instead of misguided policies what is needed are practical and sustainable ways to resolve the green energy issues, and this should involve everyone and all parties putting their heads together to come up with realistic ideas. Party pandering and competitiveness only encourages this lack of common sense and practicality. At least Labour attempted to listen to common sense. The Tory's don't appear to, which is probably half the problem.

Binley's blown it...he'll never lead his party now ! If Cameron followed his 'advice' and forced a confrontation with the LibDebs over the core policies which they hold close to their heart, they would force the LibDems into dissolving the coalition. The Conservatives would then attempt to govern without an overall majority. There would soon by a general elaction and based on current polls, Labour would be back. carry on with the deep thinking BB !
