WARNINGS have been issued after weather experts predicted heavy snow storms, with the potential to cause “severe disruption”, will hit the county tonight.

Meteorologists said “fairly heavy snow falls” were expected over Northamptonshire this afternoon and into the evening. The expected deluge could cause chaos across the county, experts have said, with Arctic temperatures turning snow to treacherous ice.

The Met Office has also issued a weather warning for the region.

A spokesman from Pitsford Hall weather station, which is based at Pitsford School, formerly Northamptonshire Grammar School, said: “Saturday will start off dry, but wind is likely to increase during the afternoon accompanied by some fairly heavy falls of snow.

“This snow is likely to carry on into the evening, becoming heavy at times in areas further east, but is likely to turn to rain in areas further west. Unfortunately, the dividing line between heavy snow and rain will very much run through the county and the public are strong urged to keep a close eye on up to date weather forecasts.”

The weather station has warned snowfall “has the potential to cause severe disruption” and, with temperatures set to plunge below freezing, warned ice will become “a widespread hazard”.

Health experts have also issued a warning for people, especially dog walkers, to stay away from frozen lakes.

Peter Lewin, from the East Midlands Ambulance Service’s hazardous area response team, said: “Every year someone loses their life and there are many more near misses after people have ventured out onto a frozen pond or lake to play or save a pet dog which has got into difficulty.

“Ice-related drowning is easily preventable and I urge parents to talk to their children about the dangers of playing on frozen water, and pet owners to keep their dogs on a lead.”

Age UK Northamptonshire chief officer, Liam Condron, asked people to keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.

He added: “The winter can be a dangerous time for older people. Getting ready for the cold weather means you are more likely to keep warm and well. If there is anyone you know who might be at risk contact Age UK Northamptonshire.”

Northampton Town FC last night said the club did not expect to have pitch inspection before today’s match at Sixfields. Northampton Saints bosses also remain confident today’s match at Franklin’s Gardens will survive the chill.

11pm. 3 inches, and very, very pretty under the dim glow of the odd street lamp here and there. Now, where else in the country could you get such sudued lighting to show the beauty of it all?.

It might not snow at all, but after that build-up, let's have some serious disruption anyway.

"WARNINGS have been issued after weather experts predicted heavy snow storms, with the potential to cause “severe disruption”, will hit the county tonight." "Heavy Snow? It is quite light actually. Let us not get in the way of a predicted story though.
