Arctic weather is coming to Northamptonshire

WEATHER expects have warned an Arctic snap will hit the county at the weekend, with temperatures set to plunge to a freezing –5C and snow storms forecast.

Meteorologists are predicting a Russian weather front will move over the county on Saturday and Sunday, with temperatures during the day set to barely rise above freezing before falling “sharply” at night. Brief snow storms are also being forecast for Sunday.

Gritters were last night preparing to treat the county’s roads from 7pm as authorities warned motorists about icy conditions across Northamptonshire.

The cold weather has already resulted in the abandonment of racing at Towcester Racecourse today because the track was frozen.

However, bosses at Northampton Town Football Club and Northampton Saints yesterday said they remained confident crunch clashes on Saturday will go ahead, as both prepare to fight off the freeze.

Cobblers are due to play Macclesfield Town at Sixfields, with Saints set to take on London Wasps in the LV= Cup on the same day.

A giant inflatable tent was yesterday erected over the playing surface at Franklin’s Gardens to keep the pitch from freezing, while a Cobblers spokesman said covers had been on the Sixfields pitch since Monday.

Gareth Willsher, communications manager at Sixfields, said: “The covers have been down since Monday. The pitch is absolutely fine under the covers and we don’t see any reason why the game on Saturday won’t go ahead at the minute.”

Police have also issued a warning following a spate of car thefts in Northampton and Earls Barton as motorists left their vehicle while defrosting the windscreen.

The thefts include a gold Isuzu 4x4 stolen from Rushmere Road, Northampton, yesterday.

Inspector Dave Harley, of the force’s auto-crime team, urged motorists to keep an eye on their vehicles at all times on wintry mornings.

He said: “We have had a number of thefts reported in the Northampton area and Earls Barton during the last couple of days.

“It is vital that vehicles are clear of frost and snow before being driven but it is important that motorists stay with their vehicles while defrosting.

“People naturally assume that nothing is likely to happen outside their house within the space of a few minutes. But opportunist thieves are always on the lookout for easy pickings and an unattended car with the key in the ignition is exactly that.

“This type of crime is preventable and we urge members of the public to allow extra time to safely clear their windscreens in the morning.”

Roll on summer then they can moan about hot weather instead, it's like a roundabout isn't it, too cold in the winter too hot in the summer too springlike in the spring too leafy in the autumn?

Judging by bthe amount of salt and grit thrown around the villages of Fosters Booth and Weedon on pavements we will have a shortage next week. There must be a good covering of an inch!

Looks like Britain is going to grind to a halt [ as usual ] NO public transport, NO schools open, NO work NO binmen until the spring. The gritting lorries will run out after 2 days the country will be in utter chaos even though you've been warned for well over a week Siberian weather is on the way.Other countries seem to be just getting on with their everyday lives in this cold snap, they just clear the snow away Oh i forgot you cant do that in Britain for HEALTH & SAFETY reasons.

If you leave your car unattended in the morning with the engine on to defrost, if it is stolen I belive you will not be insured. Just like leaving your front door open if you go out.

If people leave their car unattended for the cars to defrost are asking for trouble, doesnt take 2 mins to scrape a windscreen

Who are the weather experts? The weather front is moving in off the Atlantic, from the West. Russia is to our East. Granted the cold air we have at present has been flowing from the East and it is the weather front from the West moving into this cold air that will produce the snow over the weekend. There could be quite allot of snow as the milder air battles with the colder air from the East and we are going to be right under the middle of it. An interesting weather weekend to come, if you like snow that is!
