PUPILS at a Northampton school were flying the Australian flag to celebrate their partnership with their counterparts Down Under

Classrooms at Caroline Chisholm School (CCS), in Wootton Fields, were decorated and students swapped uniforms for beachwear for Australia Day, the anniversary of the first fleet at Sydney Cove.

CCS is twinned with Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, in Melbourne, with both schools named after the Northampton-born-humanitarian, who is an Australian icon.

Director of business and enterprise, Sue Rose, said: “Students took part in an ‘Anything Australia’ mufti day and were asked to dress in a way that celebrated an aspect of Australian culture.

“As expected, our students were most creative in their choice of outfits which included kangaroos, surfer dudes and Caroline Chisholm herself, complete with bonnet.”

She said: “The whole school really got into the Australian spirit, with the entire site decorated in flags and bunting and the Cafe serving a range of Aussie tucker.”

More than £1,200 was raised from fund-raising activities for a Caroline Chisholm commemorative window The Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
