Heading in the right direction at school
Lumbertubs Primary School, Tonmead Rd, Northampton. School received a 'satisfactory' judgement but also recognised by Ofsted it's improving.
A SCHOOL in one of Northampton’s deprived areas is overcoming underachievement, according to Ofsted’s new inspection framework.
Lumbertubs Primary, in Tonmead Road, was described as a ‘satisfactory, but improving’ school as its overall judgement by the Government’s education watchdog.
It was one of the first schools in the county to be visited by Ofsted under new guidelines, which has reduced the key inspection areas to just four.
The report said: “Improvements have been made in key areas of the school.
“In particular, due to the resolve and determination of the headteacher [Pauline Turner] and senior staff, there has been a concerted approach to school improvement.
“This has resulted in improvements in teaching and learning and improved procedures for checking provision and pupils’ progress.”
The public report said pupil behaviour was good and achievement was satisfactory, with pupils making steady progress in their learning with some aspects, such as the Early Years Foundation Stage, described ‘good.’
“Previous underachievement, which resulted in low levels of attainment at the end of year six, is being overcome and pupils now attain average levels in reading, writing and mathematics.”
The report said teaching was satisfactory along with leadership and management.
“The headteacher’s leadership is good and she is supported well by senior staff.
Self-evaluation is accurate and there is a clear vision for the future of the school.
“Even so, the impact of leadership and management on provision and progress is evident, though it has not yet been sustained over time.”
Responding to the findings, Mrs Turner said the inspection was a fair judgement.
She said: “We were very pleased with the report and think it was a fair reflection of the school and of our self-evaluation.
“It recognised the improvements that have been made within the school and the hard work of our staff.”
From January 2012 schools will be judged by Ofsted on:
Achievement of pupils
Quality of teaching
Quality of leadership and management
