Two sisters who set up a tanning salon in Duston nearly 10 years ago are celebrating after winning the Chron’s Salon of the Year competition.

Lynne Seal and Jayne Ayris launched Tan’d in Woodley Chase after they were both made redundant from the warehouse they were working for.

Since then, they have never looked back and the salon is going from strength to strength.

The Chronicle & Echo recently called for public votes to find the most popular salon in Northampton. Readers were asked to vote by text, as well as cutting coupons out of the paper.

Lynne was delighted when she heard the news that their salon had won.

“It is lovely that people have voted for us and they appreciate what we do. We have lots of really lovely, loyal customers, Lynne said.

“People can sometimes feel intimidated coming into a salon, but we are not like that at all. We are just normal family girls,” she said.

The sisters, who live in Moulton, had always had plans to set up a tanning salon.

“We talked about having a tanning salon years and years ago. Mum and dad had talked about it and we always used to hire a sunbed during the winter at home.

“We love the sun and love going on holidays but we never ended up doing it,” she said.

Both Lynne, 53, and Jayne, 48, were working in the same factory when the owners were forced to close.

“Over the years, on and off, we have worked together in the same place.

“We loved working at the factory and we really liked the people that we worked for. When it closed we had to look for another job.

“It was always going to be difficult going off and doing our own thing and when we saw the tanning salon up for sale, we took the gamble and went for it,” she said. When the sisters set up the business they also took the first floor flats and converted them into a hair salon and nail salon. They rent the space out to independent people.

“We are both very down to earth and very professional at the same time,” Lynne explained.

“We have customers who pop in just for a chat, even if they do not want to use our facilities, which is lovely. We are very happy here.”
