A cacophony of noise is set to blast out form the Guildhall courtyard in Northampton today as part of an event marking the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO).
People are being encouraged to bring instruments to the occasion, starting at noon, in order to make a ‘minute of noise’.
Organisers say the sounds will act as a show of defiance against the discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender internationally.
The Mayor of Northampton, Councillor John Caswell, councillors and representatives from community groups are also due to give short speeches at the event.
Northampton Borough Council’s assistant cabinet member for community engagement, Councillor Anna King, (Con, Phippsville) said: “IDAHO is an important date in the calendar as it raises awareness about people who have suffered from hate or prejudice because of their sexuality.
“I hope everyone will join us to raise their voices against the violence and discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people face all over the world.”
