A romantic surprise proposal rounded off Strictly Northampton 2015 when Joe Moriarty popped the question onstage to his unsuspecting girlfriend in front of 1,200 people.

Dancer Danielle Alphonso’s Strictly Northampton participation was cut short two weeks ago when she suffered a knee injury and had to pull out of the contest, much to her huge disappointment.

The 27-year-old was called on to the stage at Derngate at the end of the show, sponsored by Aspers Casino, and given a special mention and bouquet of flowers from Step by Step’s Andrzej Mialkowski.

Then Joe climbed on to the stage from the audience and went on bended knee to tell Danielle how proud he was of her and asked her to marry him.

She said “yes” and the whole audience, dancers and judges erupted into cheers and applause.

Joe, who is a project manager for a construction company, said afterwards that he had been planning the proposal for the past six months and was delighted she said yes.

Danielle, 27, who works in admin for the same company as Joe, said she couldn’t stop crying when he asked her to marry him and that she would be starting to plan the wedding straightaway.

“I couldn’t believe it was happening!” she said.
