Worldwide fame for shop owner who foiled raiders with a mop
THE story of a Northamptonshire shopkeeper who fought off robbers with a mop, has spread across the world.
Images of Dinesh Gorania and his son Kishan have been broadcast as far away as India and America along with news of their amazing bravery.
When faced with three masked men attempting to rob his shop in Church Hall Road, Rushden, last week, the 52-year-old fought the gang off with only a mop.
Dinesh, who has run the store for 20 years, was helped by 21-year-old Kishan, who armed himself with a hockey stick.
Since then they have been inundated with calls from national newspapers, magazines and television. He said: “We have had a lot of interest; my phone has been ringing non-stop.
“It’s been on every channel and in all the papers. It’s even gone to America, Germany and India.
“But I am a normal man and I will be pleased to get back to normal.”
He added: “I am very pleased with the way the police investigation has been going and I hope they catch them soon.”
The investigation was launched after the attempted robbery took place shortly before 10pm last Friday.
Dinesh was getting ready to shut the shop and was mopping up, while Kishan was taking in signs from outside the store when three masked men pulled up in a car.
The masked man went into the store but Dinesh hit him with the mop. The man tried twice more to get back in but Dinesh used the mop to repeatedly hit him, while Kishan grabbed a hockey stick to keep the man away.
Two other masked men got out of the car, with one throwing a metal bar at Dinesh, which he managed to block with his forearm.
After being unable to force their way into the store the men got back into their car, pulled around the corner into Rose Avenue and the first man got out of the car and smashed the windows of Dinesh’s van and Kishan’s car.
A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: “Thankfully in this case, the victims were not harmed, but we would always direct people to call the police on 999 as soon as possible and not put themselves in harm’s way.”
