Violent sex offender who kept victim for hours after rape is jailed
Steven Cook
A VIOLENT sex offender who raped a 42-year-old woman in Towcester has been jailed for six-and-a-half years and branded a continuing danger to women.
Steven Cook, aged 42, subjected his victim, who cannot be named, to a humiliating rape ordeal last August which left her so afraid she did not report it for two months.
Piers Reed, prosecuting at Northampton Crown Court, said Cook met his victim at a pub in Towcester and invited her back to his home on August 19.
He said: “At first, he was perfectly pleasant but after a short time his behaviour seemed to change. On the way back to the house, she met two males she knew and exchanged some banter with them. This appears to have mightily upset Mr Cook who took her forcefully to his home and began throwing items at her, pots and tins, and then told her to get into the bedroom.
“He held her down on the bed, forcibly took her clothes off and raped her. All the while she made it clear she was not consenting and did not want this to happen.”
The court heard she was then prevented from leaving Cook’s home for a number of hours.
Cook, of Hick Court, Towcester, pleaded guilty to rape and assault, and was jailed for six-and-a-half years with an extended licence, and possible recall to prison, until February 2022.
Sentencing, Judge Rupert Mayo said Cook had a history of violence against women and posed a significant risk of committing further violent offences, especially against women: “I have to deal with you for a rape which is aggravated by the use of force, by the humiliation of your victim and by the fact she did not feel able to leave the flat for some six to 10 hours after you raped her.
He added: “The public would be best protected if I passed an extended sentence.”
James House, mitigating, said Cook, who will now be on the sex offenders’ register for life, had admitted his guilt and chose not to fight the allegations in order to show his remorse.
