A road in Northampton town centre that was partially closed for nine hours has been reopened after a man came down from the top of St John’s car park.

The eastbound carriageway of Victoria Promenade was closed between the Swan Street junction going towards the A428 Bedford Road junction after the man put himself in a position of danger shortly before 4am.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: “Police officers are continuing to speak with him now he is in a place of safety.”

Road closures in Victoria Promenade have been lifted.

It is understood the man was wanted by police and fled to the top of the car park. Police officers were unable to reach him for so long in case they put him in danger.
