Officers and medics were called to St James Park Road in St James at about 3am after neighbours found a man, believed to be aged about 19, in the street.

Witnesses said he was bleeding and appeared to have a chest injury. Officers held clothing over the wound, witnesses said, until the first medics arrived and he was later taken to hospital.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: “There were a group of young people messing around in the street making a lot of noise before it happened.

“My partner called the ambulance as we could see something serious had happened; he was just lying in the street. He was in a lot of pain when the police officers were helping him.”

It is understood a police dog team were looking for a knife when they cordoned the road off near Ambush Street this morning.

The road has now reopened.

Police have since confirmed that a 19-year-old was taken to hospital with “serious but not life threatening injuries”.
