Two dogs almost starved to death after Northamptonshire owner failed to give them enough food

A man has admitted a charge of animal cruelty by failing to adequately feed two dogs who almost starved to death.

The court heard Cohen, who was living in a caravan in Towcester, split with his partner in September 2014.

The couple maintained contact as they had a child together and, during a visit to Cohen on June 10, his ex-partner noticed the two dogs were in a poor condition.

Janita Patel, a senior prosecutor for the RSPCA, said; “She said both dogs’ ribs were clearly visible and she said the both looked like a bag of bones.

“She said to him ‘they are nearly dead, what have you done?’”.

The RSPCA took both dogs away to be treated and, within a few weeks, both dogs weights’ had increased by almost 50 percent.

Cohen, who pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, told the RSPCA that he did not have enough money to feed himself so he was giving the dogs any little bits he had such as cereal, although he knew this wasn’t a suitable diet.

The case was adjourned to allow for a pre-sentence report to be carried out.
