Thieves who broke into a children’s centre in Northampton fled with the youngsters’ favourite toys.
A number of scooters and tricycles were taken from Blackthorn Children’s Centre during a burglary sometime between 4.30pm on Friday, September 20 and 8.30am on Monday.
The scooters were taken from the garden of the creche, which caters for children aged three months to four years old and is part of a larger community building for Blackthorn residents.
Early years lead, Anna Parsons, said: “One of our local volunteers noticed someone had broken into our outdoor shed on Monday morning.
“It’s disappointing because the scooters are the children’s favourite toys. They are the ones they argue over and ask for when they aren’t out.
“We haven’t told them yet that they’ve been taken but they will be missed.”
Centre manager, Katherine Whites, added that there was not a budget to replace the stolen toys.
She said: “We would struggle to replace the scooters and trikes.
“We don’t have the funding for more play equipment so the reality is that they won’t be replaced.”
This is the first incident of its kind at the centre which has two outdoor spaces for the community.
Mrs Whites added: “Blackthorn Good Neighbours is a community organisation and this building belongs to local residents.
“They use the community garden, which opened in April and has been nominated for an award, and for various groups and activities while they leave their children in our creche.
“We have some nice equipment here and lots of people come to the building to use it, which is our aim.”
Since the burglary, staff at the centre have implemented further security measures.
