Six people charged with ‘courier fraud’ scam that targeted elderly people in Northamptonshire

Six people are who allegedly tricked elderly people in Northamptonshire into handing over their savings after they pretended to be police officers are due to appear in court next week charged with fraud.

The five men and a woman are due to appear before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday (May 18), accused of running a ‘courier fraud’ mainly targeting pensioners across Hertfordshire, Wiltshire and the Midlands, including Northamptonshire.

Mohammed Miah, 21, Salam Uddin, 19, Motahir Rahman, 24, from London, and Arafa Begum, 21, and Jahangir Khan, 23, from Birmingham, are accused of tricking victims into handing over bank cards and PIN numbers having posed as police officers claiming their bank accounts had been hacked.

Between January 2 and February 27, 2014 alone, the men are suspected of making in excess of 1,300 ‘phishing’ calls to landline numbers.

All five have been charged with two counts of conspiracy to defraud between December 19, 2013 and March 12, 2014.

A sixth person, 22-year-old Fareed Miah from Birmingham, has also been charged with conspiracy to money launder.

The East Midlands Serious and Organised Crime Unit have worked alongside West Midlands Police and the Crown Prosecution Service’s Complex Case Unit to secure the charges.
