The House of Fraser store in Northampton’s Grosvenor Centre was evacuated today after a woman allegedly armed with a knife caused a disturbance on the ground floor of the shop.

Police were called to the store shortly after midday and a woman has been arrested.

Eye-witnesses reported the woman was stabbing cardboard boxes with a knife.

A police spokesman said ‘nobody was in danger’ as a result of the incident.

Oliver Pentelow, aged 28 was with his girlfriend who was buying some perfume when he heard a noise at the back of the shop.

Mr Pentelow, of Abington, said: “Everyone was evacuated from the store and then they put the shutters down so nobody could get in.

“When we were being evacuated some people were running but most were walking.”

Mr Pentelow said the store was still closed to customers.
