Pub’s licence suspended after brawl which left man unconscious
The Crispin on Great Russell Street.
A PUB in Northampton has had its licence suspended following a brawl which left a man unconscious.
Police described the scene at The Crispin as “carnage,” stating the floor was covered in blood and broken glass.
Officers were called to the pub, in Great Russell Street, at 12.45am last Saturday, when two people were taken to Northampton General Hospital.
At a meeting of Northampton Borough Council’s licensing sub-committee yesterday, councillors ordered the licence be suspended and the landlady removed with immediate effect.
Sgt Mark Worthington, of Northamptonshire Police, said the force was told there were several people fighting, tables were thrown and one person was on the floor.
Before the phone was disconnected, he said the operator heard glass smashing in the background.
Sgt Worthington said: “There were five people fighting. An individual was on the floor, possibly unconscious, not breathing.
“The officers described it as carnage and said the place had been trashed.”
Two victims of grevious bodily harm were taken to hospital, where one needed surgery on a fractured skull and the other on a fractured cheekbone.
Sgt Worthington said: “The licensee was spoken to at the scene. Officers reported she was extremely intoxicated. She wasn’t in any state to run the pub.”
Sgt Worthington also said the pub, which has a licence to serve until midnight on a Friday night, should not have been open past 12.30am.
Landlady Andrea Harris said the fight began at 12.20am.
And she insisted: “I wasn’t intoxicated. I’ve got a broken hip and I’ve been on strong painkillers. I drank two glasses of wine that night.”
Describing the events of the night, she said: “It was a great night until tensions built up much later on.”
She said she shut the bar at midnight, then went upstairs to make a cup of tea.
She told the hearing: “I heard a commotion and came straight back downstairs, where I saw an almighty brawl and people fighting.
“I went straight into the middle of it and tried to help the man who was unconscious.
“I did everything in my power to talk to people, to try to calm people down.”
Christopher Nolan, the leaseholder of the pub, said: “If we get the opportunity we’ll get CCTV in. It’s our livelihood on the line.”
Sub-committee chairman Norman Duncan (Con, Park), said: “The sub-committee has a duty to ensure all premises are run in a proper manner and unfortunately we feel this has not been the case here.”
A full review of the licence will be carried out within 28 days.

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 12:51 PMThis place should be shut down - not have its licence suspended. It has be frequented by low-life criminal scum for as long as I can remember. But given where it is I suppose it was bound to be.
