A CCTV camera that police officers can attach to their stab vests is already helping to deter anti-social behaviour, according to police.

The £600 mini-camera can record up to five hours of footage at the switch of a button and is the latest technology to help Northamptonshire Police tackle anti-social behaviour and other low-level crime.

Granta Housing Association donated the piece of equipment to the police community team in Upton, near Duston, to help them deal with minor crime.

Pat Daniels, the resident involvement co-ordinator for the association which has around 100 homes in Upton, said: “We are really keen to support the police in this area and glad that we can assist them in helping the community.

“We want to make sure that any anti-social behaviour is nipped in the bud before it can become a problem.”

PCSO Lee Shelton, who has been using the equipment, said: “It’s really easy to use and wear and has already proven useful.

“I’ve been to an incident where switching on the camera instantly quells the situation.

“Anti-social behaviour is better in this area than in previous years but this camera acts as a deterrent and we have had lots of positive feedback from local residents.”

Northamptonshire Police hopes to roll out the equipment to all officers, with funding from local businesses and community groups.

Chucky123 i don't know which part of Upton you live in but where i live in Upton the PCSO's have really helped us out with our issue. Over the last 2 years that worked really hard to remove one problem family that caused us loads of issues. Added to that whenever i've called them they've always been happy to help. You can't complain that they aren't solving your problem if you don't call them. And the article can't be inaccurate, if people aren't calling then the stats will show that ASB is down so how are the police to know that there is still a problem?

The comments in the article are quite inaccurate. Anti-social behaviour is still very rife in Upton, but people no longer call the police as they don't do anything and quite often do not turn up when a report is made, The camera exercise is a PR stunt for Granta Housing as it's many of their housing associatin tenants that cause the Anti-social issues!!! Total farce!

Tarquin, I hope you aware that Upton is not part of the Eastern District.

They've been doing this for years, so it's hardly news. Indeed, the Chron have reported on this many times. All that's changed is the cameras are getting smaller.
