Northamptonshire Police riot cop praised by David Cameron for his role during summer disturbances
A POLICE officer who was driving a van when it was pelted by bricks and stones by yobs during last summer’s riots has been recognised at a Downing Street reception.
Pc Gary Wright, from the Daventry Safer Community Team, was invited to the Number 10 reception alongside Inspector Dave Lowe, from the force’s emergency preparedness unit, as well as dozens of officers from across the country who were involved in dealing with the riots.
The pair received a personal thank you from the Prime Minister David Cameron for the part they played in dealing with the disturbances in Northampton and London.
PC Wright was the driver of a police van when it was attacked by a group of youths in Wellingborough Road last August.
Inspector Dave Lowe was also recognised after he was called at short notice to get a team together to London to support the Metropolitan Police as mass disorder in the capital spiralled out of control.
PC Lowe was deployed to Newham where serious disorder was taking place. His team took control of the High Street, secured all the main junctions and relieved local units.
During the informal reception the Prime Minister thanked officers for their work.
Inspector Lowe said: “It was a personal honour to represent Northamptonshire Police at Number 10 and to meet the Prime Minister and an absolute privilege to be there on behalf of all the officers who were involved in policing the disturbances over the summer.”
PC Wright added: “It was very much an honour to represent my colleagues from Northampton Police that were involved in what was an eventful evening during the disturbances. Visiting Downing Street was an enjoyable occasion, seeing the PM meeting up with representatives from all the emergency services from up and down the country.”
