A 47-year-old man from Northampton has been jailed for 16 years by a US judge after he admitted having sex with an American schoolgirl.

Richard Castle, aged 47, pretended to be a 17-year-old boy to worm his way into the affections of the schoolgirl, who he met over the internet in 2009 when she was 12.

Using the name Richard Joshua Parker, Castle contacted the girl over the internet between 2009 and 2011.

He then travelled to Ohio for a holiday in 2011 and admitted having sex numerous times with the girl in his hotel and her home during his three-week stay in the US.

Castle was arrested after authorities in the US requested his extradition, following a complaint by a teacher to whom the girl had confided the relationship.

Castle was arrested by Metropolitan Police officers in January 2012 at his home in Northampton and indicted by a federal grand jury the following month.

He hotly contested his extradition, ordered in April 2012, and took his case to the High Court in London but two top judges rejected his appeal.

He was sentenced on Monday by US District Judge Timothy Black in Dayton, Ohio.

Castle admitted charges of coerceing a minor to engage in illicit sexual activity, travelling with intent to have sex with a child and sending obscene materials, on October 3 last year.
