A driver has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of a 79-year-old man who was knocked over and killed as he crossed London Road in Northampton.

Patson Magaya, aged 24, of High Street, Collingtree, Northampton, appeared at Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Monday after he was charged with causing death by careless driving in relation to a fatal collision on January 30 this year.

The court heard the victim John Johnston was crossing London Road in Far Cotton at 6.45pm when he was allegedly hit by Magaya’s Citroen C2.

Vicki Walker, prosecuting, said Mr Johnston, who was described by witnesses as “frail, walking with a stoop and moving very slowly”, was carrying bags of shopping when he attempted to cross the road.

Mr Johnston died at the scene after suffering fatal chest injuries.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction in the case. A preliminary hearing will take place at Northampton Crown Court in September.
