Unsightly bins and horrible street furniture could be addressed with a new £50,000 fund to spruce up Northampton town centre.
Borough councillors and businesses leaders are drawing up a hit list of “grot spot” areas that are driving away visitors and customers.
Readers on the Chronicle & Echo’s Facebook page said they wanted Abington Street and alleyways off The Drapery and the Market Square to be among the priorities.
Craig Steele said: “I think Abington Street looks nicer to walk along since the council did most of the deep cleaning to remove the horrible chewing gum a few months ago, but the metal octagonal-shaped seats could do with a repaint.”
Sandra Beveridge said: “The alley between The Drum Pub and The Shipmans pub stinks of pee and is filthy.”
Stan Golebiewski said: “Abington Street by the statue [is dirty] and remove the people that hang there all day. Gives the place a very bad name i think.”
The improvement will become noticeable in January, the council said.
Money from developers as well as from Northampton Town Centre BID will be contributing to the fund and it is hoped that work can begin in January.
The clean-up is likely to centre on Abington Street, the Market Square, The Drapery, St Giles Street and the roads surrounding All Saints Church.
Stephen Chown, chairman of the Northampton Town Centre BID, said: “We have already done work in The Drapery and the Market Square.
“We have some beautiful and high-quality heritage buildings in Northampton and just a small amount of additional work would give the heritage centre a big lift.
“We are all striving to create conditions where people view the town as a great place to visit and the BID is keen to get the work started as soon as possible.”
