Man arrested after he ‘tried to take gun into Northampton Magistrates’ Court’

A 54-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a gun after an incident at Northampton Magistrates’ Court this morning.

The man from Northampton was arrested by police officers at the court on Thursday at 9.45am. The man is currently in police custody.

It is believed the man was arrested after security guards alerted police when he attempted to get through the metal detector.

Johnathan Morris, who witnessed the incident, said armed police were called to the scene but the man was quickly subdued by police officers.

Mr Morris said: “It all happened very quickly. As I came up the steps into the reception I could see the handgun had been placed on the security table.

“He was surrounded by security and was then arrested.”

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: “A 54-year-old man from Northampton was arrested on possession of a firearm following an incident at Northampton Magistrates’ Court.”
