Jealous ex-lover caused horrific injures with Samurai sword during attack on new boyfriend
A JEALOUS ex-lover barged his way into an ex-girlfriend’s Northampton home and attacked her new boyfriend with a Samurai sword, a jury heard.
John Nash, aged 37, is accused of forcing his way into an address in Lower Hester Street, Semilong, last July while his ex-partner and her new man were in bed together, and then attacking him with a sword.
He is alleged to have attacked Peter Catlin, a 24-year-old from Romania, causing horrific injuries, including a severed finger, which had to be re-attached by surgery, a large cut to an arm and a deep head wound, requiring 18 stitches.
Stuart Alford, prosecuting at Northampton Crown Court, said: “There is no dispute John Nash went to the house and no dispute he caused the injuries. The issue is whether he acted in self-defence and whether he intended to cause the injuries the complainant received.
“The complainant describes how he met the defendant’s ex-girlfriend and started a friendship which then became more intimate. On July 27, the afternoon before these events, the two of them met up and spent the afternoon together, meeting at a pub and then going back to her address.
“They drank some wine, ate some pizza and then went to bed together at about midnight.
“An hour-and-a-half later, at 1.30am, there was a loud banging at the front door and the defendant will tell you how she went to a window to see who it was and said ‘It’s my ex-boyfriend’. The evidence is she and the defendant had previously been in a relationship together.
“She says she found the front door damaged from the force of the defendant banging on it. There was a discussion between them in the narrow hallway and Mr Nash then went upstairs. What Mr Catlin will tell you is that as he stood up, the next thing he saw was John Nash coming through the bedroom door, with a sword above his head. He says Nash then hit him with that sword.”
Giving evidence via an interpreter, Mr Catlin said: “All of a sudden he appeared in the bedroom. I was sitting on the bed and as he came in on the spur of the moment, He had something in his hands so I put my hands up. I did not have much time to react. He hit me. There was one blow to my hand, then my head and my arm. The middle finger almost came completely off. It was hanging.”
Nash, of Paddock Mill Court, Blackthorn, denies wounding with intent.
The trial continues.
