Husband threw brick at baby death suspects

A husband who hurled a brick through a Northampton flat window and shouted “baby murderers” at a couple accused of killing their seven-week-old son has been told he must carry out unpaid work.

Colin Burgess, aged 45, of Fawsley Road, Delapre, was yesterday sentenced for criminal damage and assault after the incident on July 8 last year, as police were investigating the death of baby Jamie Kightley.

Burgess, together with his wife and stepson, who have already been sentenced for the incident, went to the flat in London Road, Far Cotton, at about 8pm. The flat was where baby Jamie’s parents, Adam Kightley and Jacqueline Parker, lived. At the time the pair were both under investigation for his murder.

The court heard Burgess’ wife, Jo, had given a police statement in relation to the death of Jamie, who died on March 17, last year. She then received threats and was subjected to intimidation, the court was told.

After going to the flat to confront the couple, Burgess was heard to shout “baby murderers” up at the flat and was heard talking on the telephone asking someone to “get the boys down here now”.

He then hurled a brick at the first-floor flat window, smashing the glass, and striking Ms Parker. She was left with a two centimetre gash on her forehead and required hospital treatment.

Burgess was given a community order for 18 months, 120 hours of unpaid work and must pay £250 costs.
