Eyewitnesses say sex at Northamptonshire lay-by takes place ‘on daily basis’

editorial image

EYEWITNESSES have claimed that sexual activities, reportedly taking place in a lay-by off a busy Northamptonshire road, are on a “daily basis”.

Local people said men were now using two lay-bys near the village of Hannington, to meet for sex at all times of the day and night.

They said they had seen men cruise through the site in their vehicles throughout the day, before heading into other people’s cars, the nearby woods or even camper vans.

Eyewitnesses told the Chron yesterday liaisons were so frequent that condoms were frequently pinned to trees for men to use.

Others claimed they had seen the same cars driving through the lay-by on a daily basis.

People spoke to the Chron after we reported on Saturday that a woman said she was shocked when she pulled into the lay-by at around 2pm one day to stretch her legs, only to find men having sex nearby.

The woman, who asked to remain nameless, was with her four-year-old daughter at the time.

She said she pulled into the lay-by, having driven from the south coast, to let her dog out of the car for five minutes, but immediately saw men waiting in their vehicles.

When she went to walk her dog in a field behind the lay-by, however, she saw elderly men engaged in sexual activities.

She said: “I saw two elderly men, totally naked and about 70, engaged in sex. This was in a small wooded area, but was open to one side, so they could not fail to be seen by anyone passing by.

“I was horrified and tried to cover my daughter’s eyes.

“I was shocked at the frequency and numbers of single men pulling up in their cars.

“There were about 15 cars in the lay-by when I returned to the car, most of them empty.

“As there is nowhere else to go, they must have headed into the fields.

“I still cannot find words to answer my daughter’s questions of: ‘Mummy, what were those men doing in the field naked?’.”

Have to wonder how the "eyewitnesses" got close enough to see the condoms pinned on the trees? Unfortunate turn of phrase from the Chron reporter too. Not sure what is meant by she stopped in the lay-by to stretch her legs! Seriously though this layby has been known for this type of goings on for all of the 30 years I have lived in the County and probably a lot longer. The first time I drove past the layby in question I was warned not to stop in the "gay by" at night.

4x4 fan....you claim her dog is known for it's sexual activity...perhaps that's why the lady chose this particular layby

Whilst it is an offence to have sex in a public place which is likely to cause offence to public, the story reported here has a few quirky statements. The woman drove from the south coast to kettering where she had just moved to with her husband - as reported in an earlier report. Almost home she stops in a layby to walk her dog (which is known for its sexual activity - even The C&E reported such goings on there on the 11th August 2003! so the local authorities and police have known about it at least since then)!. Even though there were approx 15 cars stopped, no occupants in some and others had single men in them she continued - most odd and I would guess most would say not very safe thing to do. she then went into a field to walk her dog with her daughter - was she on a footpath or was she in fact trespassing? In saying all of this I do not condone what may have happened on this occasion.

I must say, everyone knows about these, and anyway, most people would know better than to use a layby 'picnic area' that is shadowed from the main road as dodgy dealings are always going on. I can't imagine why the lady would want to stay in an area that was full of men in their cars anyway! A bit of common sense needed there? It is disgusting, but until the police deal with it, or place cctv there, it will continue.

If it's so well known, why have the police done nothing...after all, outraging public decency is a criminal offence, irrespective of sexual orientation.

No wonder the kid was crying. Fancy having your mother panic and shoving her hands over her eyes! She should have just treated the scene as a casual everyday happening! How did the dog react? :-)

Disgusting. I won't call them men, because they are clearly not. I'm not sure whether they need treatment or a prison sentence? Their photos should be put on the front page of The Chron. Maybe that would put an end to this sordid, sad and murky business. I feel sure their friends, families and relatives don't know what they are up to. If they did, it might put a stop to it. What are the Police doing about it? Nothing I suspect.

Why do we find this a surprise? it's been known as 'the gay-by's' for years as no-one dares do anything about it.
