DRUGS worth more than £6,000 were found by police at the home of a dealer’s sister, prompting him to hand himself in and own up.

Dean Bailey, aged 29, admitted he stored large quantities of cocaine and cannabis at his sister’s home in July 2010.

However, he denied he intended to supply the cocaine, telling police it was poor quality, which he had bought for just over £100.

Northampton Crown Court heard yesterday how police discovered 66 grams of cocaine, worth £2,600, along with 616 grams of cannabis, worth £3,500.

Bailey, who previously admitted possessing the class B cannabis with intent to supply, maintained the cocaine was for personal use and that he did not intend to sell it.

But on the day he was due to face a trial, he pleaded guilty to the more serious offence, shortly before a jury was sworn in.

Bailey, of Sir John Pascoe Way, Duston, Northampton, was sentenced to a total of three and a half years’ imprisonment.

Matthew Kirk, defending, said Bailey had stayed out of trouble for 18 months while on bail. He said: “When the drugs were found, he handed himself in to police and admitted responsibility for all the drugs which were found, having taken himself off to the police station.

“There has been no further offending in the past 18 or 19 months and a very substantial period of time has passed.”

Sentencing, Judge Richard Bray said: “I give you credit for pleading guilty although your plea of guilty to the cocaine was made at a very late stage on the day of trial.

“I bear in mind the cocaine in question was of damaged quality, the references before and the time which has passed, but having said that, these were serious offences involving 66 grams of cocaine which you obviously bought with the intention of passing on to others, along with substantial quantities of benzocaine and skunk cannabis, which you were storing at your sister’s address for reasons that are quite obvious.”
