Car crime halved in past four years across Northamptonshire
VEHICLE crime in Northamptonshire has halved in the past four years, latest figures from the British Crime Survey have shown.
Statistics measuring the period from September 2010–11 showed the number of recorded incidents of vehicles being stolen or broken into had been reduced from 9,643 in 2008 to 4,839.
The figures also showed that the number of sexual offences, burglaries, violent offences and criminal damage in the county had all decreased.
The total number of reported crimes was down by six per cent.
However, there had been a slight rise in the number of reported drugs offences and robberies.
Northamptonshire Police said initiatives such as Operation Guardian and Operation Nightsafe had increased the number of recorded drug crimes, but that did not necessarily mean actual drug activity had risen.
A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: “We have continued to see reductions in crime, as these figures demonstrate, in particular serious acquisitive crime.
“Our force figures also show a higher reduction than the national average, of four per cent, which is a further good result.
“The reductions in crime, together with an increase in public confidence show we are helping to make this county a better place.
“One of the main successes for us has been in safeguarding members of the public living in problem areas which have been blighted by criminality, drugs and anti-social behaviour.
“However, we cannot be complacent. We still need the public to remain vigilant to robbery, burglary and vehicle crime.
“There are basic crime-prevention steps that members of the public can take to ensure their safety and the safety to their property and help us continue to reduce crime.”

Sunday, January 22, 2012 at 07:55 AMStropppy40..I was an insurance uinderwriter. Jackson is correct and your understanding of disclosure is totally wrong and likely to leave vehicle owners uninsured. Your insurer requires you to disclose ALL accidents, irrespective of whether they are insurance claims, reported to the police, or simply kept quiet. The most obvious example is in respect of damage to your own vehicle when you cannot make a claim because you have TPF&T cover . Failure to make full disclosure may enitle the insurer to treat the policy as void and reject any claim (including those which have already been settled). Of course....it is not easy for your insurer to find out if previous claims have not been reported to the police.....

Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 04:29 PMAgh!!! It is painful to read how much some on here have misunderstood this! The British Crime Survey is conducted independently and records peoples perception of crime, not necessarily reported to the police (I.e it asked if have been a victim of robbery etc in the past 12 months - not if you have reported it to the police). This is conducted nationally (NOT by the local University) and is widely regarded as the most accurate way of reflecting the true indication of crime in the UK.

Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 03:42 PMThe "ONLY" reason are that car crime is down are that the car makers are making them more difficult to steal and with the soaring price of insurance drivers can't afford to loose their no claims discount. There is an increase in the number of drug and robbery offences. Before the police start patting themselves on the back we should be asking why people don't report the offences any more. Is it because the judges give them a slap on the wrist and tell them to be good boys in the future?

Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 12:47 PMan impressive result in no short measure due to the excellant work and vigilance of the PCSO's working alongside the Police officers and Neighbourhood wardens. Shame the conservative councillors have voted to withdraw the funding at both NCC and NBC extremely shortsighted decision one which residents did not wish to happen.

Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 12:30 PMReporting a crime to the police makes no difference to your insurance premium. Only actually reporting to your insurers can do that. If you wanted to claim on your insurance then you'd have to report to the police anyway. There may be some who don't report minor thefts but that's probably always been the case.

Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 11:02 AMWhat a load of garbage. Most people do not report car crime any more because their insurance will double. "British Crime Survey". Conducted by half wits from Croby University. They impress their friends in the press office though. No news? make it up.
