Bus driver ‘shook up’ after gunpoint robbery on Northampton estate

A BUS driver remains “shaken up” after he was threatened at gunpoint and then punched to the face during a terrifying armed robbery.

The driver of a number 29 bus, from Greyfriars Bus Station, was threatened with a gun and robbed after pulling into a bus stop in Avon Drive, in Kings Heath, on Monday night. The attacker pushed the emergency stop bottom before he pulled out the weapon and then demanded the driver hand over money.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses following the robbery, on between 6.20pm and 6.30pm.

The driver’s sister-in-law posted a message on Facebook last night saying he was still “totally shook up” but said he is “bearing up”.

A police spokesman said: “The number 29 bus was parked on Avon Drive at the bus stop when an offender pushed the emergency stop button at the rear of the bus.

“The offender then approached the driver window and pointed a gun at the driver and demanded money. He then handed the driver a orange carrier bag, in which the driver inserted money. The offender then punched the driver in the face and ran off.”

The robber is described as male, wearing a black hooded top, approximately 6ft tall and would have been carrying an orange carrier bag.

Officers are keen to speak with anyone who witnessed this incident or saw anyone in the area of Avon Drive, Witham Walk or Church Green, before or after the incident.

Witnesses can call Northamptonshire Police on 101, or ring alternatively Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

HOS, The Police have actually been pretty good in working with bus operators regarding safety and security at Kings Heath. In addition to the visible patrol from the local Police teams, the Police are using un-marked cars and occasionally plain closed Police posing as passengers. It would be unfortunate if the good people of Kings Heath were to lose their bus service due to a small number of such incidents, don't you think? I'm sure all bus companies are following "guidance" from Police to improve security for our passengers, crew and other road users. Best Wishes

Law and order needs to be reinstated in Kings Heath, then they can work on maintaining it. The bus companies should refuse to go there for a while until its sorted. They have had to do this in other areas of Northampton in the past.

...so all that is needed is a rule that headgear should be removed when getting on a bus so that a nice clear mugshot can be taken...

This is the reason for the hoody, the driver would need a floor camera looking up. I imagine the police already have a lot of names in mind . The main group being the large number of low life drug using thick worthless scumbags that infest this town. As bad as it is you have to laugh, this moron thought it was a good idea to rob a bus. Hes not a Butch or Sundance. I have no doubt his mum loves her little angel.

Jimorourke, if you were a witness, he was the one holding the gun.

What we expect in Kings Heath is the rule of law and order to be maintained so the sooner these highwaymen are detained the better wouldn't you say?
