A preacher who was jailed for a week-long campaign of rape today had his convictions overturned by three senior judges at the Court of Appeal.

Paul Denton, 47, of Barnhill Road, Wembley, but formerly of Hood Road, Daventry, Northamptonshire, was accused of a string of rapes of a woman.

After the self-appointed Christian teacher’s convictions on seven counts of rape, he was jailed for 12 years at Inner London Crown Court last February.

But he continued to protest his innocence and in December took his case to the Court of Appeal in London in a legal bid to clear his name.

Lord Justice Moses, Mr Justice Burnett and Judge Anthony Scott-Gall declined to give a judgment on that occasion, but today quashed every one of Mr Denton’s rape convictions.

Criticising omissions given by the judge to the jury at the trial, Lord Justice Moses said Mr Denton’s convictions were “unsafe” and overturned them.

Discussions on whether there should be a retrial of the allegations are ongoing, meaning no more details of the case or judgment can be published.

Mr changed his name to “Lord Denton” by deed poll and claimed he was sent by God to save the people of Daventry.
