A major incident room has now been set up to investigate Mr Brickwood’s death, which police are treating as murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Graham, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a dreadful assault on an elderly man in his own home in the early hours of the morning.

“Fortunately, incidents of this nature are incredibly rare, and I would appeal to the public to contact us if they know anything about Mr Brickwood’s death or what may have happened in the hours leading up to this incident.”

Anyone who was in the Lindsay Avenue area in the early hours of this morning who saw or heard anything unusual is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101
