A 61-year-old man who was the victim of an alleged assault in Northampton town centre has died.
A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said this morning that George Wedderburn, of Byfield Road, St James, who was allegedly punched once in the face after he tried to intervene in a fight between three men, died on Saturday due to “significant head injuries”.
The alleged assault is reported to have taken place at 3.55am on Sunday, August 17 close to Steffans jewellers in Abington Square.
Daniel Tero, 22, of Burleigh Road, Kingsthorpe, appeared at Northampton Magistrates’ Court last week charged with malicious wounding.
He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Northampton Crown Court for a preliminary hearing at 10am on Wednesday, September 3.
Police officers investigating the incident are now keen to trace a man who they believe may also have tried to act as a peacemaker. He was a tall, white man in his early twenties. He had a small beard and wore a blue T-shirt and glasses.
This man, or any other witnesses to the incident, should call Northamptonshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111..
