County’s rich history featured in collection
Jonathan Humbert from JP Humbert's Auctioneers with Northamptonshire history book collections.
A ONE-OFF collection of more than 200 books featuring Northamptonshire’s history will be sold at auction.
Rare books and maps, which date back to the 18th and 19th century, will be sold at unreserved prices at JP Humbert’s Auctioneers in Towcester.
Green leather-bound volumes one and two of Baker’s History of the County of Northamptonshire, dated at around 1830, are in mint condition and expected to sell for around £1,500.
Owner of the auctioneers, Jonathan Humbert, said the collection, which had come from Cornwall, was unlike anything else he had ever seen.
He said: “This sale is unprecedented. It’s a two generation collection, the like of which will never be seen again.
“We are delighted to have a collection of quite possibly the finest books I have ever seen.”
The books focus on the history of Northampton and all areas of the county, with information about churches, the River Nene and directories and maps of the area.
The works at the auction will include Bridge’s History of Northamptonshire, Northampton and the Great War 1914 to 1918, Churches of the Nene Valley and vintage copies of Kelly’s Directory for Northamptonshire.
Mr Humbert said: “There are so many interesting and fresh to market items of county interest in the sale and they are all unreserved.
“They are very attractive books. Some are the finest quality of full leather bound volumes.”
He added: “There is very much a sense that these books are coming home. They have been out of the area for generations and I am proud to be offering them. This is a one-off opportunity.
“They represent an interesting snapshot in Northamptonshire’s history. This is the last time this collection of books will be all together.
“I very much hope that they find their rightful home in the county and that people will find them interesting reading.”
Items of the collection will be up for auction at the sale on July 18 at 7pm.
Those interested can view the collection on July 18 from 9am to 4pm or on the day of the sale from noon.
