The cream of the country’s curry industry is set to do battle, with top chefs going head-to-head for the title of the UK’s King of Spice.
The cook-off for the 2015 Curry Chef Awards, organised by the Bangladeshi Caterers Association, will be staged at Northampton College’s Booth Lane campus on October 29.
The challenge will see 30 chefs from 10 different regions showcase their skills by creating a dish from a ‘mystery basket’ of ingredients in just 45 minutes.
Tipu Rahman, chairman of the Curry Chef Awards, said: “It is a huge honour to be asked by the BCA to organise this competition and I am delighted to be staging it in my home town of Northampton.
“The UK curry industry is going from strength to strength and the standard of cooking is being taken to a whole new level. The state-of-the-art catering facilities at Northampton College are absolutely first class and the chefs will be given everything they need to create some truly stunning dishes.”
Mr Rahman, owner of the Tamarind restaurant in Northampton, is the current world record holder for the highest ever ‘poppadom tower’ – which stood 5ft 8in tall and was made up of 1,280 poppadoms.
The Curry Chef Awards will see the dishes and their creators rated on factors such as taste, aroma, presentation and hygiene, with the winners announced at a glamorous gala dinner to be held at the Westminster Bridge Hotel in London in November.
Judges will include Bangladeshi celebrity chef Tony Khan, well-known curry lover Lord Kennedy of Southwark and Pat Brennan-Barrett, Principal of Northampton College.
Assistant Principal at Northampton College James Whybrow said: “We are delighted to be hosting this event and it will be wonderful to see some of the most talented chefs in the country in our kitchens. I’m looking forward to seeing the dishes they produce and hopefully some of our own young chefs can be inspired by what they see.”
The cook-off will be staged at Northampton College’s Booth Lane campus on October 29.
