Travellers who set up an illegal camp on land at a former middle school in Northampton are to be evicted.

A group of nearly 30 caravans parked up on the site of the former Blackthorn Middle School in Blackthorn Road.

A Northamptonshire County Council spokesman, on behalf of the Countywide Traveller Unit, said yesterday (Monday): “There are currently 29 caravans on land at Blackthorn Middle School.

“The group was served a direction last week instructing them to vacate the site by today.

“This hasn’t happened, so tomorrow we will be in court to apply for a section 78 order which enables us to evict them from the land.”

Blackthorn was one of 15 middle schools in Northampton that closed in 2004 as the town switched from a three-tier to a two-tier education system, introducing only secondary and primary schools.

The site has been targeted by travellers several times in recent months.
