Wellingborough Council has been working on proposals for the regeneration of the High Street/Jacksons Lane site for a number of years, but reasons including funding and securing key plots of land has meant it has taken time.

Members of the council’s resources committee met to discuss whether they should agree to enter into a sale agreement for the land with Keepmoat at a meeting last month.

However, the matter was deferred so it could be brought to a meeting of the full council, which is taking place tonight (Tuesday) at 7pm at Swanspool House in Wellingborough.

Minutes from last month’s meeting state: “A lengthy discussion ensued with members voicing various concerns to which officers responded.

“Members considered that they did not wish to make a decision without full input from all members of the council.

“Cllr Scarborough proposed that a report be taken to the council meeting to be held on July 26 for discussion as to whether the council should enter into a sales agreement with Keepmoat Homes Ltd.

“This was seconded by Cllr Partridge-Underwood and on being put to the vote declared carried.”

Whether the council should enter into a sale agreement with Keepmoat Homes Ltd will now be discussed at tonight’s meeting.

The High Street/Jacksons Lane site has been the subject of much discussion in recent years.

Last July, councillors took the decision to stay with Keepmoat as the preferred developer, but adjust the proposed scheme to exclude the Drill Hall, Queen’s Hall and car park from the land they will sell to them.

They made this decision on the basis that there was a desire to dispose of the majority of the site to Keepmoat for the purposes of bringing forward a mixed tenure residential development.

The retained land, comprising the area around the Drill Hall and Queen’s Hall, will be considered for other uses and a report will come back to the committee at a later date.

Keepmoat has developed a revised scheme design, which it will be formally submitting through the planning process shortly.
