The leader of Northampton Borough Council and cabinet member for housing will be joining others to sleep rough for a night on January 31 to raise money for Northampton Hope Centre.
The sponsored Big Sleepout at Christ Church in Abington is organised annually by the Northampton Hope Centre, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2014. It aims to raise awareness of the issues faced by homeless people as well as the charity’s biggest fund-raiser of the year.
Last year more than £20,000 was raised from the event in which 65 people slept out as well as another three events that were supported by local scouts and guides groups.
This year Northampton Hope Centre is hoping to have about 100 people taking part and raise even more funds.
Sue Wright, community fundraiser for the Northampton Hope Centre, said: “In the current economic climate we are continuing to see a growth in the number of people accessing our services, so it remains crucial that we continue to raise these funds to ensure we can continue to provide the best possible service to those who really need it.”
Councillor David Mackintosh, leader of Northampton Borough Council, who is taking part with cabinet member for housing Councillor Mary Markham, said: “Mary and I took part in the Big Sleepout last year. Experiencing a little of what it means to be homeless and spending the night talking to people who were either homeless or had been homeless was an eye-opener for me. Each of the stories I heard that night have stayed with me. Homelessness can so easily affect anyone of us. Everyone who sponsors this event will be making a contribution to what is a very worthy cause.”
